Individual psychological therapy

For adults who understand a great deal—but still feel emotionally stuck

Specialist, individually planned therapy in York and online across the UK.

Reasons people come to therapy

You may be experiencing the effects of a particular event, or struggling with patterns that developed over a much longer period. I have a particular interest in women in midlife whose competence and sense of responsibility have helped them succeed, but have also made it difficult to recognise their own needs, limits or distress.

  • PTSD and the effects of traumatic experiences
  • Complex, developmental or relational trauma
  • Anxiety, shame and persistent self-criticism
  • Difficulties with trust, closeness, boundaries or rejection
  • Burnout, over-responsibility and difficulty switching off
  • Significant changes in identity, work, relationships or midlife

A clear, human process rather than a fixed programme

Therapy begins by developing a shared understanding of what is happening, why it may make sense and what you would like to be different. We agree priorities rather than trying to address everything at once.

EMDR

A structured therapy used particularly for trauma-related difficulties, following assessment and preparation.

Relational work

Understanding how important relationships shape trust, safety, closeness and boundaries.

ACT and compassion

Responding differently to difficult thoughts, shame and self-criticism while acting on what matters.

Parts-informed work

Understanding conflicting responses—for example, the part that keeps going and the part that is exhausted.

More than insight alone

Understanding your history can be important, but therapy should connect that understanding with how you feel and live now. The work may include processing distressing memories, responding differently in relationships, setting boundaries and recovering a sense of choice.

Therapy is not intended to continue without purpose. The aim is for you to need me less, not more, with progress and endings discussed openly rather than left vague.

What to expect when you enquire

01 · Brief enquiry

Email a short outline of what you are looking for. You do not need to describe traumatic experiences in detail.

02 · Initial conversation

If the enquiry appears potentially appropriate, we can arrange a free telephone conversation of up to 15 minutes. This is not a therapy session or assessment.

03 · First appointment

If we agree to proceed, practical arrangements and terms are confirmed before the first 50-minute appointment.
